BHL Buffer

I finalized the buffer kit design, and ordered a couple prototype boards today.

This is the piece needed to turn the phono board into a full-function preamp.  Or to be a standalone buffer (no gain) preamp.  Now I just need to find a potentiometer to include with it.  Or maybe an inexpensive one so people can build their own stepped attenuators or use their favorite pots.  I have used lots of Alpha pots from Mouser and they are pretty good.  I might just include that so people can use them or upgrade to something really great if they want.

  2. I was talking to a friend of mine last night about the idea of using the phono board as a pre amp. We were listening to the boozhound phono pre amp with a Denon AU-S1 step up and Benz Ace cartridge and we couldn't get over the fact how realistic it sounded!

Hope the preamp will work well with LDR attenuator.

Wouldn't mind having a Boozhound (Hiraga) prepre to go with the phono pre. (hint hint ;) )

  3. Glad you are enjoying the phono stage. Sounds like a great setup.

A prepre is definitely on the to-do list. Maybe after the buffer preamp.

I definitely like the LDR idea. Right now, the buffer stage just has inputs, so you can do all the attenuation and source selection on pots or whatever. The various LDR attenuator and input selector kits will drop right in. They can likely use the same power supply.

    1. When will the buffer preamp be available? Thinking of hooking it up with LDR attenuator and input selector from Uriah Dailey (http://www.buildanamp.com/)

  4. I should have the prototypes this week. Would you be interested in testing out a board and letting me know what you think?

  7. I'd love to. I will have to order a new phono board from you as well. Please let me know what the costs are. Perhaps I can pay you via my PayPal account?

  8. Any luck with the prototypes?

  9. Hi Orson,

I have the few prototypes. Does $50 shipped for the untested buffer kit sound reasonable? I'm not sure what the final pricing will be yet.

  10. Sounds fine with me. Can you tell me how much it will be for the phono board + buffer kit + shipping costs to The Netherlands? My Email address is o.c.f.sam@free.fr.

  11. Hi Jason,

I've just sent you an email with my details. Hope your email address is still the same :)

  12. I might just hold off on building the B1, just for a while to see how this turns out. I just got the phono kit in the mail. Looks sexxy with those burgundy caps. Why change them?

  13. So the story with this buffer is that the board is done, and works, but I'm just not happy with a 1uF output cap. It is fine for the high output phono stage for 2 reasons: a little low end roll off is just a bit of rumble filter, and the high output impedance requires a high input impedance from the following stage anyway.

I really want a 10uF output cap for the buffer, but haven't been able to find anything as good, relatively plentiful, and inexpensive as the PIOs I use for the rest of the caps.

So now I am considering offering the kit without an output cap so that people can use whatever they like and can afford/scrounge.

What do you all think about that? If you were building this, what cap would you choose?

  14. Hi Jason,

Perhaps this explains the good results with CD, but mediocre results with vinyl. Have you tried this website:
    http://www.sovtube.com/product.php?id_product=73

They have the 10 uF Russian PIO caps you're looking for.
